Resting Your Pal: Eight Hours of EXP a Day, and a Heal With No Limit
Rest is the EXP that keeps coming while you are away, and it costs nothing. The trick to using it well is that the Rest button runs two meters at once. One is EXP, which a pal can earn for up to eight hours a day. The other is HP, which heals for as long as the pal sleeps, with no daily limit at all. Every tip below comes from keeping those two apart.
The basics live in the care guide
Feeding, healing and how mood scales EXP are covered in the pal care guide. This article assumes them and is only about the Rest button: what it pays, when it pays, and how to time it.
Two Meters, One Button
Rest lives on your dashboard. The Rest panel's Start Rest button rests the pal you have selected, every card in My Collection has a Rest or Wake button of its own, and Rest All and Wake All do every pal at once. There is no cooldown, so rest and wake as often as you like; the only rest the game refuses is one for a pal that is already resting.
Three things multiply the EXP and never the heal: the Restful Slumber perk, a guild EXP boost while your guild has one running, and your pal's mood, which gets a tip of its own below.
Rest Everyone When You Log Off
An awake pal gains no EXP while you are gone; a resting one is filling both meters. So the habit worth building is one tap on Rest All on your way out, and one on Wake All when you are back. Every pal has its own eight hours rather than a share of one pot, so resting all of them is never a waste.
An overnight rest leaves the new day alone
A rest you began the previous day pays up to eight hours of EXP when you wake it, and none of those hours come out of the new day's eight. The day here is the game's day, the same one for every player, and the allowance belongs to the day you wake a pal; an overnight rest is charged to neither day. So a full day can look like this: spend the eight however you like, start one more rest when you log off for the night, wake it the next day for up to eight more, and the new day's eight are still waiting.
When the Eight Hours Run Out, Rest for the Heal
Once a pal has used its eight hours, the Rest panel says EXP limit reached for today and its button changes to Rest for HP. Press it anyway. The heal runs at the same 1% a minute, and resting past the limit costs nothing, because the day's count only ever includes the hours that paid EXP.
This is where rest pays for itself between battles. Whatever a fight takes from your pal stays taken when it ends, win or lose, unless the fight levels it up, which refills its HP. Rest is free and has no daily limit, so put a hurt pal down between fights: 100 minutes covers any wound.
Wake It Before the Arena
A resting pal cannot fight. The battle picker shows it under a moon with a Resting badge and will not let you choose it, and if every pal you own is asleep it says so and points you to the dashboard. The server drops a resting pal from any team, too, and the arcade plays with a pal that is awake. Waking costs nothing, though: the hours it rested are paid on the spot, and it can go straight back down after the fight.
If you own Caretaker Mode, keep in mind that it can put a pal to sleep for you: any pal of yours under half its max HP that is not resting starts an ordinary rest by itself, the same rest the button starts. For the fight itself, the Battlegrounds advanced tactics pick up where this leaves off.
Pet It Right Before You Wake It
Mood multiplies the EXP a rest pays, on the five bands laid out in The 36-Hour Clock. What matters is when it is read: once, at the moment you wake the pal, not when it lay down. Happiness keeps draining while a pal sleeps, on that same clock, so an eight-hour rest costs about 22 points of it. That is enough to carry even a pal that lay down with a full bar out of the top band before you wake it.
Here is what one eight-hour rest pays a level 100 pal before any perk, by the mood it wakes in:
So the tap that pays is a few pets just before you press Wake, not a few before bed. The Pet button by the happiness bar works on a sleeping pal. Mood touches the EXP only: the heal and your NP are the same whatever the mood.
The Short Version
And the one thing rest never does: earn NP. Waking pays EXP and HP, and no NP at all. It does count toward any rest-hour or EXP quest you have open, the rest-hour kind in whole hours per wake, so a nap just short of two hours counts as one. Whatever a quest pays is the quest's reward, collected when you claim it, and the rest itself never touches your wallet.
