The Elemental Type System: How Types, Strengths, and Weaknesses Work
Every companion in NuPalz has one or two of 26 elemental types, and those types are the foundation of the Battlegrounds combat system. Type matchups determine how much damage your attacks deal — hit a weakness and you'll deal bonus damage; hit a resistance and you'll barely scratch the surface. This guide breaks down how the entire system works.
The 26 Elemental Types
NuPalz has significantly more types than most creature games. The 26 types span natural elements, energy forms, cosmic forces, and abstract concepts. Each type has its own visual identity and strategic niche.
The first 15 types (Fire through Fairy) are the "classic" types that most players encounter early. Tech, AI, and Glitch form a digital trio with unique interactions. The remaining types — Chaos, Sound, Spirit, Cosmic, Dream, Beast, Sweet, and Speed — are rarer types found on evolved or specialty species. Speed is a utility type that provides agility bonuses rather than offensive matchups.
How Type Matchups Work
In Battlegrounds, every attack has a type, and every target has a type. When you attack, the game checks the attacker's move type against the defender's type to calculate a damage multiplier:
Damage Multipliers
- Super Effective (2x damage) — Your attack type is strong against the defender's type
- Normal (1x damage) — No type advantage or disadvantage
- Not Very Effective (0.5x damage) — The defender's type resists your attack type
- Immune (0x damage) — Certain rare matchups nullify the attack entirely
The multiplier applies to the base damage of the skill. A 100-damage Fire attack hitting a Nature-type defender deals 200 damage (super effective). The same attack hitting a Water-type defender deals 50 damage (not very effective). For dual-type defenders, multipliers stack multiplicatively — a dual weakness results in 4x damage. This makes team composition and move selection critical in every battle.
Core Type Matchups
The classic triangle — Fire beats Nature, Nature beats Water, Water beats Fire — is the starting point, but NuPalz's 26 types create a web of interactions far more complex than a simple triangle.
| Type | Strong Against (2x) | Weak Against (0.5x) |
|---|---|---|
| 🔥 Fire | Nature, Ice, Steel, Sweet, Beast | Water, Rock, Ground, Fire, Dragon |
| 💧 Water | Fire, Rock, Ground | Electric, Nature, Water, Dragon |
| 🌿 Nature | Water, Ground, Rock, Spirit, Dream | Fire, Ice, Flying, Nature, Dragon, Steel, Beast |
| ⚡ Electric | Water, Flying, Steel, Tech | Electric, Nature, Dragon (Ground: immune) |
| ❄️ Ice | Nature, Flying, Dragon, Ground, Beast | Fire, Rock, Steel, Ice, Water |
| 🌍 Ground | Fire, Electric, Rock, Steel, Tech | Nature, Water, Ice (Flying: immune) |
| 🪨 Rock | Fire, Ice, Flying, Glitch | Water, Nature, Ground, Steel |
| 💨 Flying | Nature, Beast, Sweet | Electric, Ice, Rock, Steel |
| 🦾 Steel | Ice, Rock, Fairy, Sweet, Glitch | Fire, Ground, Steel, Water, Electric |
| 🐉 Dragon | Dragon, Chaos | Fairy, Steel, Ice |
Did You Know?
Dragon-type attacks are super effective against other Dragons — making Dragon vs. Dragon battles extremely volatile. A well-timed Dragon skill can end a fight in one hit, but so can your opponent's. Electric is completely immune against Ground-type defenders (0x damage), and Ground attacks can't touch Flying types at all.
Advanced Types and Rare Matchups
The rarer types — Ghost, Dark, Light, Fairy, and the digital/abstract types — have fewer hard counters but play specialized roles. Chaos is especially unique: its attacks deal reduced base damage but ignore all type resistances.
| Type | Strong Against | Weak Against |
|---|---|---|
| 👻 Ghost | Ghost, Psychic, Spirit | Dark, Light, Steel |
| 🌑 Dark | Ghost, Psychic, Dream | Fairy, Light, Dark, Beast |
| 💡 Light | Dark, Ghost, Dream, Spirit | Light, Steel, Cosmic |
| 🔮 Psychic | Beast, Spirit, Sound | Ghost, Dark, Psychic, Steel |

Species and Their Types
Every one of NuPalz's 70 species has one or two types, and those types stay consistent through evolution — a Fire-type companion evolves into a stronger Fire-type, not a Water-type. Many species are dual-typed, adding extra strategic depth. Here are some notable species:
Notable Species by Type
- Fire: Flamekin (Fire/Spirit), Pybble (Fire/Rock), Blazefury (Fire/Dragon)
- Water: Aquami (Water/Spirit), Tidelle (Water/Sound), Aquasiren (Water/Sound)
- Electric: Flicko (Electric/Speed), Voltrix (Electric/Tech)
- Ice: Frostail (Ice/Fairy), Glacibi (Ice/Water), Frostfang (Ice/Dragon)
- Flying: Zephyra (Flying/Light), Cumulo (Flying/Spirit), Jetstream (Flying/Tech)
- AI/Tech: Corelix (AI/Tech), Bytebug (Tech/AI)
- Cosmic: Celestia (Cosmic/Light/Fairy), Galaxi (Cosmic/Dragon), Cosmicpaw (Cosmic/Dragon)
- Dark: Umbrex, Shadowmere, Voidle
Building a Balanced Team
Knowing the type chart is step one. Using it to build a team that can handle any opponent is step two. Here's the strategic framework:
Type Coverage
A balanced team has moves that can hit as many types super effectively as possible. If your entire team is Fire, a single Water opponent shuts you down. Aim for at least three different attack types across your team.
Defensive Synergy
Pair companions whose weaknesses are covered by each other's resistances. A Fire-type is weak to Water, but a Nature-type resists Water. A Nature-type is weak to Ice, but a Fire-type resists Ice. Together, they cover each other's vulnerabilities.
Mode Considerations
Battlegrounds supports three combat modes, and team composition matters differently in each:
- 1v1 battles — Your single companion needs to be self-sufficient. Types with fewer weaknesses (Steel, Fairy) have an edge.
- 2v1 boss battles — Pair a high-damage attacker with a defensively bulky companion. Hit the boss's weakness hard while your tank absorbs hits.
- 3v1 raid battles — Maximize type coverage. The raid boss has massive HP, so you need sustained damage from multiple effective attackers.
Pro Tip
Status effects like burns deal damage over time regardless of type matchups. If you're facing a type you can't hit super effectively, status effects and skills with utility bonuses become your primary damage sources.
Type in the Broader Economy
Type matchups affect more than just Battlegrounds damage. Winning battles earns NP, EXP, Bond points, and loot drops including crafting materials. A well-built team with strong type coverage wins more battles, which means faster companion leveling, more NP income, and better loot — a compounding advantage that makes understanding the type system one of the highest-value skills in NuPalz.
