- Control the center. Move pawns to e4/d4 (or e5/d5 as black) early. Central control gives your pieces more mobility and restricts your opponent's options.
- Develop your pieces. Get knights and bishops off the back rank before moving the same piece twice. Each developed piece is a new threat your opponent must account for.
- Castle early. Move your king to safety and connect your rooks. An exposed king in the center is a liability that skilled opponents will exploit.
- Don't bring the queen out too early. The queen is powerful but vulnerable to harassment by minor pieces. Develop your minor pieces first, then deploy the queen when the position calls for it.
